British Air Force Typhoon jets have conducted a mission with France's air force in a combined operation on an hidden munitions depot in Syria used by the Daesh militant organization, per a report from the UK's MoD.

The location, identified by surveillance, was believed to be storing arms and explosives, the statement said, and was situated in hills just above the historic site of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our fighter planes used laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to hit a series of entry passages down to the facility... preliminary assessments suggest the strike was effective," the MoD said.

There was no sign of any civilian casualties in the operation on Saturday evening and every plane involved made a safe return, the MoD added.

The Typhoon fighters were supported by a Voyager tanker plane.

Daesh - also known as Daesh - established militant control over large swathes of Iraq and Syria prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This strike demonstrates our UK leadership, and determination to work closely with our partners, to eliminate any revival of Daesh and their violent and radical beliefs in the region," the British Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary remarked.

RAF aircraft have performed patrols over Syrian airspace to "forestall any efforts to regroup" of IS after its defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the ministry said.

"I must thank the personnel of our armed forces participating in this strike for their expertise and their courage," he commented. "Including them were numerous British troops deployed over Christmas and New Year. This operation, to remove terrorist threats who pose a risk to our way of life, shows how British military are ready to step up, all year round, ensuring Britain's security within its borders and strong abroad."

In December, the United States armed forces conducted what it called a "massive strike" on Daesh sites in the country, following an attack killed two US servicemembers and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The UN says Daesh still has roughly 5-7 thousand militants in Iraq and Syria.
