Super Typhoon Fung-wong Ravages the Philippines: Two Fatalities and Large-Scale Evacuations Confirmed

The island nation has been hit hard by Super Typhoon Fung-wong, resulting in at least two people dead and forced the evacuation of more than 1.4 million individuals.

Authorities reported that the massive storm triggered extensive flash flooding, coastal inundation, landslides, and destructive gale-force winds, leading to the relocation of millions of residents nationwide.

Widespread Destruction and Emergency Operations

In the town of Pandan, a severely affected area, disaster response teams documented rising waters climbing to rooftop levels and residences being swept away by the powerful currents.

Our team saved fourteen people stranded atop a house engulfed in flood in a flood-prone area,” an emergency official explained. One resident frantically contacted us, reporting the roof of his house was about to be ripped off due to the storm. We rescued him and four relatives.”

As of Monday morning, authorities confirmed two fatalities: a drowning victim on the island and a second individual who died after her home gave way in eastern Samar.

Typhoon Strength and Forecast

The super typhoon was downgraded to a typhoon on Monday morning as it crossed the main island, home to the national capital.

Per meteorological authorities, the storm’s sustained wind speed dropped from 185 km/h to 165 km/h, though wind bursts peaked at more than 275 km/h.

The storm system is expected to lose strength as it moves in the direction of Taiwan.

Relief and Assessment

The country’s emergency management agency stated it was still working to evaluate destruction to infrastructure and homes.

Roughly 6,000 evacuation centres have been opened to accommodate 92,000 families.

Recent Context and Climate Impact

The typhoon hit shortly following Typhoon Kalmaegi, which killed hundreds of lives with another 135 missing before moving on toward Vietnam, causing five deaths there.

Searches for those still missing had to be suspended recently over risks to emergency personnel.

The climate crisis is causing cyclones more intense and common. Fung-wong is the 21st typhoon to impact the nation in 2025.

Researchers have found that the frequency of intense cyclones hitting the Philippines has increased by more than 100% in the past twenty years.

International estimates suggest that intense storms cause an average of US$3.5 million in damage to the country every year.

The Philippine president declared a state of emergency on Thursday due to the severe damage from Kalmaegi and anticipated impacts from the new storm.
